ASB Corner Quarter #1 Recap!

The challenges of 2020 have been relentless, and affecting all of us. This has definitely been the most challenging time in my professional life. That being said, our Student Government class is doing its best to provide some hope and activities for students on our campus and we wanted to take this opportunity to share some of our work.

Our class this year is divided into seven groups: four ASB committees and three sets of class officers. Each committee has a brief summary of their year so far, but in general ASB committees service the entire student body whereas classes (Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshman) are responsible for fundraising and activities unique to their class.

We will attempt to include updates in the student newspaper, but we would also encourage you to follow our class via Instagram, Snapchat, and Google Classroom, all of our social media information can be found on the Montgomery website.

We hope restrictions begin easing in the spring, giving us more opportunities to have students on campus in safe and socially responsible ways. Hope to see you soon!

President’s Message:

This first quarter has been a huge learning experience for the ASB class, and we are trying our best to work and adapt to the rules in place during this global pandemic. We are hoping as the year continues that we can hold more drive through or in person events. It is difficult with the construction to get on campus and prepare, let alone host events. We want to keep our Viking family connected and support you guys the best we can in these difficult times. Feel free to give us feedback by texting or DMing one of our social media accounts, and we will answer any questions to the best of our ability. I know it is frustrating sitting at home all the time and not getting to interact with your peers, but we need to remember to stay safe and responsible during these times so that we can hopefully pick up and have a strong rest of the year.

Publicity:

In the first quarter of distance learning in the Publicity committee in Student Government, we've made the official Snapchat account for Montgomery High School. This is another resource for students to see important information such as promoting clubs, awareness and current events. An app named YOLO is connected through Snapchat which allows students to send questions or comments anonymously. With the anonymity of the YOLO, we are able to see more opinions and perspectives of our peers.

For the second quarter, we are in the making of a video bulletin that has been in the works since the beginning of the year. We are planning on posting on the Montgomery High School ASB Instagram IGTV or Youtube channel as much as possible. Our first video will be posted on October 21, 2020. It will feature this year's ASB President Gabe Tucker, asking him questions that will give insight on his life. We have planned to interview more staff and students in the future.

Activities Committee:

Our Activities Committee has tackled the world and uses of social media to bring our Vikings a taste of what it means to be in high school. So far, we have had one of our famous “Red Out” spirit days, and awarded our winners with DoorDash! Some events that we are working on to try and bring to you are a drive in movie and a social-distance trivia night. However, these events require more legwork to put on in light of construction and COVID.

Our upcoming events include a Halloween Costume Contest from October 26th - November 1st as well as Pie Day on November 20th! Keep an eye out for how you can participate! Stay safe Vikings!

Culture:

The quarter started with an attempt at organizing a club day which unfortunately failed since most of the clubs are either non-existent, have not heard from, or are meeting but in a very low capacity. Thus we turned to the ASB instagram and snapchat accounts for getting information out, we will be reaching out to ask clubs to make videos and summaries to be posted on the NewsPaper.

Our current event is the AAA student of the quarter, we have been working on for about half a month, we have organized a meeting to clean the BB Q’s to get ready the plan is to have the drive through happen on the 30th of this month.

We have been working on a new bit which is “two props a week” which involves one two of us making a video talking about a local proposition, measure, or any political movement close in Sonoma.

Plans for the future involve contacting the antecedents to see advancements for the bathroom issue and construction.

Community Service:

The community service committee has the task to keep Montgomery High School active within the community during these unprecedented times. Although the COVID pandemic brings a lot of restrictions, our community needs more support than ever and this can only be accomplished with student participation. Recently we sponsored a Blood Drive and had many volunteers take some time off on their Wednesday to help out during a blood shortage. Now we plan on continuing our annual Canned Food Drive in November and Giving Tree Hearts in December to help out families as the holidays come around, and hopefully host another Blood Drive in the winter. While doing that we will also focus on smaller activities such as volunteering at the Redwood Food Bank and hosting neighborhood clean ups. Service is crucial and if able, students should consider playing a part in one of our upcoming events.
